Frequently Asked Questions
Fertilizing and Weed Control Programs
Q: What type of fertilizer do we use?
A: We use a granular, not a liquid fertilizer. It is a slow release fertilizer, which means the nutrients are released over a 4-6 week period.
Aeration
Q: What is aeration and what does it do for my lawn?
A: Aeration is the process where "plugs" are pulled from your lawn areas. This allows more efficient watering & fertilizing, enhances root growth, enriches surface soil, breaks up thatch layer and decreases water run-off.
Q: Do I need to aerate? How many times?
A: Everyone needs to aerate, and we will do a free estimate. It's recommended to aerate at least once a year and twice is even better.
Q: What are the plugs? Can you clean those up?
A: The plugs are scattered on the surface, which eventually break down and enrich the soil. We can clean the plugs for $45 per hour but do not recommend it- as the plugs break down, they assist in adding organic matter to your soil.
Q: Do I need to water before I have my lawn aerated?
A: If we have had some type of moisture then there is no need, but if not, we ask that you water the day before we come out.
Mowing
Q:
When is my mow day? What if it's also my watering day?
A: It should be on the estimate sheet. If it happens to fall on your watering day, we ask you to water first thing in the morning.
Q: Can you change the day?
A: We will try our best to acommodate you; however, it depends on our routes. We will mow you as late in the day as possible if it is your watering day.
Q: What time will you be mowing?
A: It will depend on your day and your location along the route. Once we have the routing schedule confirmed, we can provide a general time frame.
Q: What about dog(s) or locked gate(s)?
A: Please have your dog(s) put away and your gate(s) unlocked on your mow day.
Q: Can you mow one time?
A: For the most part, we only mow you for the entire summer. If you desire a one-time mow, we will perform the service on a time and materials basis, as there are many variables in a one-time service call.
Q: What if you break a sprinkler?
A: Just call. We will come fix it at no cost either the day you call or by your next watering day.
Yard Care Services
Q: Do you install plants? A: If you already have the plant(s) we will install them. If not, our Landscape Enhancement Team will assist you.
Q: Do you take care of gardens?
A: We only clean out gardens. We do not maintain them.
Q: What services are included in Yard Care Services?
A: The maintenance of your "non-lawn" areas such as planter/shrub areas. We prune/shape trees and shrubs, perform weed control services and remove debris and leaves.
Q: When do you prune rose bushes?
A: Mid April is the best time.
Q: Do you prune trees and shrubs?
A: Yes- heavy pruning in winter months, ongoing shaping throughout the year.
Sprinkler and Drip System Winterization
Q: What do you do when you winterize?
A: We open valves to allow drainage and turn off the water to the system.
Q: What do you need access to?
A: We only need access inside the back yard and to your sprinkler valves.
Q: Do you blow out the system or wrap the pipes?
A: We do not recommend blowing out the system or wrapping the pipes for residential homes. However, if you believe it is necessary, we can perform this service.
Q: What about the sprinkler clock?
A: Just turn it to the off position. Do not unplug it, or it will lose the settings.
Sprinkler and Drip System Turn-on and Adjustments
Q: How much should I water?
A: Generally, if you have pop-up sprinklers, water 3 times 10-20 minutes. If you have rotating sprinklers, water 3 times 20-30 minutes.
Q: When should I water?
A: Make sure to water on your watering days. Odd Addresses are Sundays & Thursdays, Even addresses are Wednesdays & Saturdays. Business addresses are Tuesdays & Fridays. Early morning or evenings are best.
